The K31 Scout Rifle Part 3 – We’re getting there

In the past two weeks I received one essential part of the build and one… less essential but very cool part of it: The scout scope and the 12 round magazine.

It looks like a proper scout rifle now

Now that the scope is installed and the magazine added, the gun has a very different look to it, I love it.

Why a 12 round mag ?

Twice the ammo, twice the firepower… also it looks really cool.

To be honest I don’t really have a need for an extended magazine. Yes, you get to shoot twice as much before reloading, but reloading is twice as long since you still use charger clips.

It’s just fun and adds a bit of flair to the gun. It also has the added benefit of nicely balancing the gun. With the scope in the front, the magazine loaded with 12 rounds makes this rifle very well balanced.

Magazine features

The magazines is stamped sheet metal with the feed lips integral to the body.

The Wyss Waffen 12 round K31 magazine

There’s witness holes for every round at the back so you always know how much rounds you still have.

The biggest downside of this magazine is that it doesn’t keep the bolt open when empty which is a bit disappointing but I can live with it. It has one advantage though: You can drop a single round in if you need a quick shot when the magazine is empty.

Taking a look at the original magazine from the top you can see that the follower is different.

The scope

I went for the Vortex Crossfire II Scout for a few reasons. First, it’s one of the more available scout scope locally in Switzerland. It’s also way cheaper than their counterparts from Burris or UTG.

I considered the Burris scout for a while but the reticle has a BDC for .308, and I don’t intend to shoot this rifle at distances where this would be useful. It’s also way more expensive and not all that available around here.

What’s next

I now have a usable rifle. I need to take this to the range and zero the scope. Not sure at what range I want to zero it but I will try 100m first.

Once I play around with the gun I’ll see what other accessories I want to add or not. I’m gonna play around with the current setup before modifying it.

See you around.
